Company Eyes 40-storey Tower with 500 Rental Units in New West

Changes made by the developer to Plaza 88’s proposed fourth tower have done little to appease New Westminster council.

The Degelder Group wants to build a 40-storey highrise with 500 rental units—235 studios and 265 one bedrooms ranging from 312 to 570 square feet—at 900 Carnarvon St. The structure would also include six floors of above-ground parking.

19665newwest131113-900Carnarvonfile“When I saw this I was really upset. I can understand why when Plaza 88 was originally developed and built there were seven floors of above-ground parking, but at the same token I don’t think that is needed here. They’re also asking for 40 floors which is huge,” said Coun. Bill Harper, who also slammed the small size of the units, at the Nov. 4 council meeting.

“The whole thing is problematic for me. I can’t see myself supporting this. Just because they say they can sell those units today doesn’t mean they’re going to be what we want 10 to 15 years from now. I have real problems with this whole process.”

White Rock Gives Narrow Go-ahead to 12-storey Vidal Project

A controversial highrise proposed for Vidal Street is going ahead, following narrow approval by White Rock council Monday.

Zoning and Official Community Plan amendments that facilitate construction of the 12-storey project received final reading on 4-3 votes, with Mayor Wayne Baldwin and Couns. Al Campbell and Helen Fathers opposed.

Fathers said she couldn’t support the amendments after hearing from residents that the project is “too much, too dense, they don’t like it.” “I don’t believe this is the right time for it,” she said.

The project, proposed for 1467-1519 Vidal St., includes 12 townhouse units and 97 apartments, underground parking and public green space.

Delta Rise Tower Unveiled in North Delta

What will Delta Rise, the municipality’s tallest tower, look like?

Politicians and journalists were given a sneak peek Wednesday at an architect’s model of the building, as well as a tour of two styles of suites the 37-storey building will contain.

blexoThe Blexo Developments Ltd. project won Delta council’s approval earlier this year and construction is expected to begin next June and be completed in 2016.

The apartment building project, just south of the Delta Shoppers Mall off Scott Road, will be located at 11941 80th Avenue and will be the community’s tallest building by far. Three 14-storey buildings currently share that distinction in North Delta. One is at 88th Avenue and 119th Street and the other are two across the street from where this new apartment building containing 317 suites will be built.
