Finnish cellphone company Nokia plans to close its Burnaby research and development facility.

It’s part of plans announced Thursday to cut up to 10,000 jobs around the world by the end of 2013.

The building that houses Legion Branch No. 148 is up for redevelopment, and if it goes through, could still have room for the Heights Legion.

It was the only option for the beleaguered Legion, according to president Dave Taylor, which has suffered financially due to changes to B.C.’s smoking and drinking laws, and increasing property taxes.

The Burnaby Value Village site at Kingsway and Edmonds Street has been sold to a developer, the latest step in the area’s revitalization.

Cressey Developments’ purchase of the three-acre property closed last week, confirmed Hani Lammam, Cressey’s vice-president of development.

Burnaby’s 401 Motor Inn eyed for social housing project.

Vancouver’s Portland Hotel Society wants Burnaby to “turn the light on” to address homelessness in the city.

Dan Small, a director with the society, spoke at council on Monday night, asking the mayor and councillors to demonstrate support for an affordable supported housing project at the 401 Motor Inn at 2950 Boundary Rd. The plan would see the motel turned into social housing with support services, such as on-site staff and counsellors.
